Health

The Opportunity:

Quebec’s health care delivery model is in evolution. The population is aging, the tax base is eroding, health care costs are escalating and many workers in health care are eligible for retirement in the coming years. Three hospitals will close when the Glen Campus opens. Will all the services currently provided by the Montreal Children’s, the Royal Victoria and the Chest Hospital be provided at the new Glen Campus? Will there be new services? What does the new model look like?

Initiatives of the CIQ/MUHC partnership agreement regarding health:

  • The MUHC will provide to the community clear, timely and accessible information on its health care services. Important topics will include, but not be limited to: what services are offered at which site and how these interact with each other, now and in the new configuration.
  • The MUHC will make best faith efforts to address concerns arising from the CIQ and or the community through various communication methods, taking into consideration the aging and other vulnerable populations.
  • The MUHC will inform the CIQ of elections to the MUHC’s Board of Directors.

The Inspiration:

Sick Kids Hospital – 2011 – Toronto, Ont.

In March 2011, the Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto decided not to renew Burger King’s lease in its food court.  A decision was made to focus more on healthier food options in the bidding process for new tenants in the food court.

Windsor Regional Hospital, Windsor Ontario

This hospital has over the past ten years committed to the overall health of its staff in addition to that of its patients. Starting with the provision of lunch time fitness classes for employees, a multitude of programs have since been developed, such as: running and walking clinics, workplace violence prevention, self defense classes, work-life balance, nutrition and safe food handling, ride your bike to work, the Biggest Loser-Weight Loss Program, Heart Health, and Get your Butt Out (smoking cessation and turning off the TV initiative). The hospital has also developed the Genius Lab, which encourages ideas from staff on potential improvements to the organization. After several recommendations (and generous support from suppliers), Windsor Regional Hospital now has two fully-equipped fitness centres open on two different campuses.
